Project 1: BioInspired

Rationale: CAPE GB FRUIT BOWL

The brief asked to design a storage system that was bio-inspired and ask ourselves “what would nature do here?” My design “Cape GB fruit bowl” was inspired by the Cape gooseberry this fruit is a tomato like fruit that is encased by a papery husk that protects it against bugs and insects that may eat it. Also with this husk it allows the fruit to stay fresh when picked of the tree for 2-3 days. With the conventional fruit bowl we get fruit flies, flies and cockroaches that may find its way onto the fruit. So to solve this problem I developed an opening and closing fruit bowl that allows you to close it when you don’t need fruit to allow the fruit to keep clean and away from insects that may contaminate the food. Also when opened it allows more fruit to be stored in the two separate compartments when visitors and guests are around. With this design I would probably like it to be made of a clear plastic so you could view the inside and see what fruit is available before opening it to take what you want. I believe this would solve the problem of insect contaminated fruit!!

  1. wow, how you made this model. it is so cool. and what material you used to made this. but i have a question about your product is when you closed the fruit bowl, don't all the fruit would be crowded together?

  2. Amazing modle. So curious about the material. Is it kind of soft material? And is it strong enough to contain many fruits? The form of this design is biomimetic but im worried about it might not so easy to get fruit out from this container.

  3. I like the interesting shape of your fruit storage and how it is shaped to protect what's stored inside.

I might suggest having a wider base as it looks like the fruits would pile on top of each other when closed.

    Nice work!

  4. The design and concept looks great! I think this is a very good example of form & function, well done! Though when I saw the product in real life the material seems soft and fragile, maybe if you made it thicker?

  5. The material and shape are fantastic. you rally capture the texture and feeling of your inspiration. You could experiment with colouring. I think this would also work well in a smaller form. Overall a great execution of biomimicry.

  6. Its beautiful, I never had seen this material and it looks so soft and yet it has a structure. If I had to suggest improvements maybe trace the surface of it with an insect repellent, its difficult to fault this and its inspirational.
